While Mac viruses are essentially non-existent in the wild, other malware is apparently not. I choose to live safely, given how much web browsing I do and how many email messages I read. Seems like a small price to pay. I note that the Mac OS X is based upon a Unix system, and certainly malware is hardly unknown on *nix systems.
