It would be convenient to configure Mathematica to auto detect sig figs according to the standard rules, and to output in scientific notation such that aaaa X bbbbbb = c.ccc x 10 ^2
It seems to me that this should be easy to do -- in fact should be a default configuration, but it's not, or it's not clearly documented in the application help files.
