Thanks. That helps some; unfortunately it still leaves the equations quite clumsy (though better than before). As another poster with a similar problem said there ought to be a way to "declare" that y[t] is a vector so that NDSolve knows it is a vector. The initial conditions act as such a declaration but apparently that comes to late for NDSolve to use it properly in general.
