Hello,
I am not sure I fully understand what you want to do.
However, perhaps something like the following?
In[16]= soln = Solve[x^3 + x^2 - 8 x + 1 == 0, x] // N
Out[16]= {{x -> 2.29542 + 0. I}, {x ->
0.127283 + 2.22045*10^-16 I}, {x -> -3.4227 + 0. I}}
In[17]= Map[Re, x /. soln]
Out[17]= {2.29542, 0.127283, -3.4227}
