"Square Roots are defined by convention to be positive"
Please forgive me if my response is naive, but who would impose such a convention and why? After being tortured by my tenth grade algebra teacher for saying 9^(1/2) = {3} instead of {3,-3}, this seems absurd - tantamount to saying "1=2" by convention.
