Hi all,

I'm using Mathematica 8.0.0 on a Linux (Ubuntu 10.04) system, and I noticed an insane RAM consumption when handling large data files.

Importing a 100Mb data file into a Table, Mathematica burns out approximately 2 Gb of RAM. The only way to clear up the memory is to quit the kernel. This is what happens:

Sys RAM occupied= 1.2Gb
a=Import['data.dat'] where data.dat is a 100Mb file
Sys RAM occupied= 3.2Gb (more than 90% of available RAM)
Remove[a]
Sys RAM occupied= 3.2Gb
Quit kernel
Sys RAM occupied= 1.2Gb

Please help!!
Thanks
