1) Reset Mathematica initialization files to default contents.
Windows 7/Vista/XP hold down Shift+Ctrl during startup
Mac OS X hold down Shift+Command during startup
Linux run from the command line with the -clean option
mathematica -clean &

2) Check the Mathematica's internet connectivity. See http://support.wolfram.com/kb/486. (This assumes other applications on the computer, especially web browsers, work fine.)
If neither of these helps, feel free to write student-support@wolfram.com. Include a description of the computer, including operating system level, and the output from evaluating
{$Version, $ReleaseNumber, $LicenseID}
in Mathematica.
