Sorry, I can't figure out how to get it to work any other way. Might have to do with how Dynamic has to be applied to make expressions be seen by the Manipulate. You could post it to comp.soft-sys.math.mathematica, via http://groups.google.com/group/comp.soft-sys.math.mathematica/topics?hl=en&lnk
