Hi Martin,
this is a problem with transparent planes. I'm not aware of any pdf-viewing software that shows the image in the same way that mathematica renders it.
As a workaround, I take a screenshot at very high magnification, so that the graphics object only just fits on my screen. You lose all the benefits of vector graphics, but in my case it's worth is for a nice picture.
Good luck, and please repost if you find a better solution.
