Hi William,
in the definition of J[x_] add the option
Method->{Automatic,"SymbolicProcessing" -> 0}
The timing of your example has been nearly the same on my box. Now a 10-segment-plot runs in 17 seconds (J[2] is 139.128 -- does that value make sense?).
