If I put ascii data files or packages in any other directory except the Mathematica directory (using Mac OS), I can't load them. I have to put my notebook and all associated files inside the Mathematica directory.

There must be a way with context or something to search another directory for associated files.

I used SetDirectory to change the directory but this isn't
reflected in $Path and I can't find a way to add a path to
$Path -

I've read the Mathematica book about a zillion times and
can't figure this simple thing out.
