Thanks Bill.
I did end up using a workaround (for the actual problem; what I posted was just a test case, obviously).
But I'm still curious: Is this actually a bug in Mathematica, or have I just missed something? I realize Mathematica can't always solve everything you throw at it, but it shouldn't go into an infinite evaluation loop, either. Has anyone else encountered behaviour like this?
