I did not duplicate the huge gap with 7.0 or 8.0, Windows or Macintosh. Two suggestions:
a) plt2 = Style[plt, PrivateFontOptions -> {"OperatorSubstitution" -> False}]
Where "plt" is the combined graphic.
b) Hold down the SHIFT key to reset some initialization files that, if damaged, could start Mathematica in an odd state. The more emphatic procedure is system-dependent; see
