Built-in functions not working

I was looking in the documentation center at the PlotLegend command, but it was showing up red every where. When I tried using it, the text remained blue instead of turning black, and when evaluating it I get an error. Can some one help? All of the legend commands were doing this. I have mathematica 8 for students.
