Would you please post a small concrete example demonstrating manually how you would do this with some simple data and all the intermediate calculations for perhaps four points? What you are trying to do is come up with a description where if you knew absolutely nothing about all the things already in your head that you would almost certainly be able to solve the problem with no further information and get the correct answer and be able to generalize this to n points and get the correct answer.
With that I think someone could see how to write a few lines of code that would do what you need.
