I was wondering if anyone could shed some light on why Mathematica 4.0 for Linux seems to be so sluggish. When the kernel is actually computing things everything seems to move along nicely (althought I must admit that I'm disappointed that the Mathematica kernel under Linux does not take advantage of multiple processors), but when it comes to the front end things more much slower. It is so sluggish that I have to be careful when I'm typing because the front end cannot keep up with my typing speed, which is certainly not stellar at an average of 30-40wps. Any light that could be shed on this would be very much appreciated.
I'm runnnig Debian GNU/Linux 2.2 (potato) on a dual PPro 200 machine w/128MB RAM. I'm using version 3.3.6 of XFree86 with the SVGA X-Server. My video card is a Voodoo3 2000 PCI. For window management I use Window Maker version 0.61.1
Thanks.
