Using * instead of .
In[1]:= Simplify[a*Cos[x]^2+a*Sin[x]^2]
Out[1]= a
Can you reproduce this?
Unless . was some other character that was corrupted by cut and paste, . is used by Mathematica for the Dot product of matricies, not for multiplication of scalar variables, at least in the American english version and perhaps others.
