the backspace and delete keys do not work in linux 2.2.15 with xfree86 4.0 and 4.0.1 (tried both)

in other words i can't delete any commands, except when i highlight them with the mouse cursor

also, clicking on any links (in math notebooks, help, etc) doesnt work unless i hold down both the ctrl and alt keys at the same time with the mouse.

i'm using gnome helix, enlightenment, kernel 2.215, mathematica 4.0 for students, usb mouse (tried with a ps2 mouse...but still doesnt work), intel pentium 3 960mhz,

i don't get any missing font errors on startup

also, is there a way to get all of standard unix keys to work under mathematica?
ie: ctrl-n moves down a line, ctrl-d deletes a word, ctrl-a goes to beginning of line ...
i know some of these keys work, but not all of them do however.

tia
