Basically my problem is this: through a long process, I end up with a function defined something like this:

f[x_]=3''x''+2

If i try to evaluate the funciton at 3, the result is
f[3]=2+3x

because of the quotations, Mathematica does not evaluate the expression correctly.

so the problem is how do i remove the quotation marks from around the x. Or more generally how can i change a string into an expression that i can evaluate? I know there is a command to do that on the TI-92, but i have not found anything similar in Mathematica.

Can anybody help?

thanks in advance,
Garth
