If the previous result is of interest only long enough to be used in the next step then perhaps use %:

StringSplit[ToUpperCase[Import[#]], "\n"];
List[StringJoin[Riffle[StringSplit[#] // Most, " "]], StringSplit[#] // Last] & /@ %;
Select[%, ! StringMatchQ[#[[1]], "*|*"] &];
Intersection[%, templatecolors, SameTest -> ((#1 // First) == (#2 // First) &)];
Complement[%, templatecolors] // TableForm
