@Bill: I was thinking about the % operator myself. However I encountered a very disappointing side effect when i tried rewriting my code to take advantage of it: This only seems to work when in the body of the main program. As soon as I package a bunch of lines from my code into a function than the whole concept falls apart. The % seems to refer to the output of the entire function in this case. Have you managed to find a solution to this problem?
Ideally I'd like to have a clean code that would behave exactly the same way no matter whether it's executed inside a function or as a stand alone program
