 Author Comment/Response Brett 06/06/13 3:37pm I'm trying to solve a system of 6 equations with 6 unknowns that comes from a physics problem involving a mass that explodes into two pieces with 16 J of kinetic energy added by the explosion. My attemp is Solve[{aa/ab == -ma/mb, ma + mb == 8.2, 0 == ma*va + mb*vb, 16 == 0.5*ma*va^2 + 0.5*mb*vb^2, va == aa*0.16, vb == ab*0.16}, {aa, ab, ma, mb, va, vb}] I get an error saying "Solve::ivar : 0.16aa is not a valid variable" then it spits out the following: Solve[{aa/ab == -ma/mb, ma + mb == 8.2, 0 == ma*va + mb*vb, 16 == 0.5*ma*va^2 + 0.5*mb*vb^2, va == aa*0.16, vb == ab*0.16}, {aa, ab, ma, mb, va, vb}] This is my very first attempt at using Mathematica, so please bear with me. ps what's the difference between "=" and "=="??
