This is what I found. If you go to your MainBook directory, right click on BrowserIndex.nb and open it with Mathematica, it will give you a syntax error and list the line and error. It seems that if you open the same file with Word, or notebook, all the lines after the first error line, is mumbled-jumbled text mixed with readable text. Did Wolfram make the this file in a different format? There are other files like this too. Contents.nb gives an error too. I renamed the browserindex.nb, which works, but if you try to look at the contents of the Mathematica book, you will get a syntax error from the Contents.nb file.
I compared the BrowserIndex.nb file from 4.2 with 4.1. They are similar, but the 4.1 doesn't have the mumbled-jumbled text as the 4.2. I think this is why we can't rebuild the index
Does Wolfram have a proplery formatted file.
