Hi,
I am exporting quadratic matrix (say Z) to dat file. I found the same matrix being imported from this data file uses much more (about 2.5 times) memory to store the data.
For example, the amount of memory required for storage of quadratic matrix 3240 x 3240 before and after export-import procedure were 83980860 bytes and 210068672 bytes respectively. Analogously for the quadratic matrix 820 x 820 the amount of memory was 5379260 bytes and 13477552 bytes respectively.

The commands were the following:
ByteCount[Z]
Export["zet.dat",Z];
Z1=Import["zet.dat"];
ByteCount[Z1]

I am currently using Pentium 4 CPU 3.00 GHz, 1.00 GB of RAM, Mathematica 5. I tested this problem using the Mathematica 4.2 and found that the exported and imported data were equivalent. So this problem belongs to Mathematica 5 only.

I would appreciate for help.
