In[1]:= expr=3*x
Out[1]= 3 x

In[2]:= f[x_]=expr
Out[2]= 3 x

In[3]:= f[2]
Out[3]= 6

In[4]:= f[Pi]
Out[4]= 3 Pi

In[5]:= f[a]
Out[5]= 3 a
