Why is vertical text cut off?

I am trying to create a somewhat complicated piece of graphics,
which contains among other ingredients a vertical line of
text. But no matter what I do, Mathematica never displays
the full text. Example:

  Show[Graphics[Text["abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz",
                    {0, 0}, {0, 0}, {0, 1}]]]

will produce a vertical text string containing the letters
a to q; the rest disappears. Doing the same horizontally
does give the full text. What's going wrong? And how
can I get the full text?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
