Huh, you learn something new every day.  If you select "Save as Special"
from the file menu and leave everything set to the default setting
(Notebook (Text)), then you do indeed get a notebook file with a very
small resource fork.  The next time you open the notebook, the graphics
get re-rendered by the front-end.
