I understand you are referring to Mathematica 3 notebooks, and not the
old format. If the notebook's overall Notebook[] expression has not
been corrupted, try editing the notebook file on an ASCII editor and
remove the notebook cache (all the lines before and after Notebook[]).
This forces Mathematica to reinterpret the notebook and rebuild the
file. If the Notebook[] expression has itself been corrupted, I think
what can only be done is look at the expression and correct it
(Mathematica indicates where the error is the first time it tries to
read the file). File corruption is a problem common to all applications
and is one of the reasons for keeping backup copies.
