In Mathematica 3.0x you need Tr  not Trace

Tr[{{a, b}, {c, d}}]

a + d

Trace is a function that gives the steps in an evaluation (TracePrint is
another one).

Finding functions can be tricky, but you will find Tr in

 Help>Help>Built-in Functions>Lists and Matrices>Matrix Operations>Tr
