Hi Frank,

First open the option inspector (e.g. type Shift+Ctrl+O). Then ensure
that the first combobox is set to "global". Then click on the + in
front of "Global Options", then "System Configuration". Then clear the
check box behind "StartupSound". The value of "StartupSound" should
change from "True" to "False" and probably a bullet will appear in
front of "StartupSound". Close the option inspector and you get no more
irritating noises when you start up Mathematica!
