I think most programs, including word processors, redraw the entire page
every time there is a change in the file.  The difference is whether or
not your computer is fast enough to do it without you noticing.  I run
Mathematica 3.0.1 on a Win95 Pentium 166 and I have never noticed a
redraw effect.
