There seem to be a lot of problems with corrupted caches and preferences
and stuff; this has been happening often with G3/OS8.5 Macs in a
heavily used student lab.

Try pressing <shift>-<ctrl> whilst Mathematica is starting up, which
refreshes the caches/preferences.

This works on other operating systems too!
