I have just obtained the beta version of Publicon, and at first glance
it looks to be more-or-less the same as the Mathematica 3.0 front end.
That is pretty sad because the mathematical typesetting capabilities of
Mathematica 3.0 leave very much to be desired.

My primary question is this: Are there any font metric guidelines
available anywhere for Mathematica? The spacing of characters in
mathematical expressions can be very poor, depending upon what font is
used, and the tedious manual tweeking of spacing that seems to be
required in general is totally unacceptable for a software package of
Mathematica's prestige and price.
