Although I only got the bit of your message you can see below I checked my
code realized that I had made a silly mistake. The correct code is of
course:
replaceInterior[a_, b_] :=
Module[{c = a, l = Length[a]}, c[[Range[2, l - 1], Range[2, l - 1]]] = b;
c]
