```First the easy part: do esc jj esc do get the equivalent of  esc ii esc.

You got the error message because you enter the "stuff" in Solve
incorrectly. Do:

Solve[{ ((2 + 4i)*a) + ((1 + i)*b) = = (118 +  24i), ((1 + i)*a) + ((3
+i)*
b) = = (110 + i 0) }, {a, b}]

You need to use = = instead of =
and you need { } to encapsulate both equations.
