As of today, after nearly eleven years of work, Stephen Wolfram's book A
NEW KIND OF SCIENCE (http://www.wolframscience.com) has been published, and
should start to be available at all major bookstores. See
http://www.wolframscience.com/order for purchasing information. (The book
has been at #1 on the amazon.com bestseller list.)

Over the course of this week there is expected to be a fair amount of media
coverage of the book (there will be pointers on
http://www.wolframscience.com). This past Saturday there was an article in
the New York Times; yesterday one in Time magazine. The June issue of
WIRED, now on newsstands, has a longer article.

Doing the diverse kinds of research needed for the development of A NEW
KIND OF SCIENCE was part of Stephen Wolfram's original motivation for
creating Mathematica. And now A NEW KIND OF SCIENCE is an important
illustration of what can be done with Mathematica.

The book contains nearly a thousand images created with Mathematica. The
main text is written to be accessible to a general audience. But the last
third of the book---which consists of historical and technical
notes---includes nearly 800 Mathematica programs used to implement the
ideas and discoveries in the book. These programs can be downloaded
(together with examples) from http://www.wolframscience.com/nks/programs.
In addition to their scientific value, they serve as prime examples of
Mathematica programming.
