4.0.1 crashes under W2k

Sorry to bother, just got a better desktop and installed W2k from scratch with SP3 etc. Mathematica 4.0.1 seems fine except PS to screen (prints fine to PS printer): no graphics are drawn, blank but selectable/sizable/etc. space instead. When I go to Cell>Convert to Bitmap, Mathematica crashes. I suspect DirectX as the culprit. When I clicked on all the system updates, one was DirectX 9.0a. Has anybody else seen this? Any advice?
