Jens-Peer, Rolf, Todd, thanks a lot for your valuable input! 

I got it working.

However, I first had to upgrade from Mathematica 4.1.5 to 4.2 --
before, TeXSave would include all sorts of Notebook[]/Cell[]
etc. functions in the output. This also happened with the current
TeXSave from the Convert.tar.gz package from the wolfram.com website.

A related error is that sometimes TeXSave emits a \IndentingNewLine
which is not defined in the latex style files.
