to steve: thats almost what i want... if this is a standard function,
how come it is not listed under a commutator heading in the mathematica
book 5 or the Commutator page at mathworld?
one small snag though... there appears to be no Jacobi routine for
terms such as:
comm[X, comm[Y, comm[X, Y]]]
-comm[Y, comm[X, comm[Y, X]]]
comm[comm[X, comm[Y, X]], Y]
comm[Y, [X, [X, Y]]]
so mathematica is unable to do simplifications
