 From the help:
expr >> filename is equivalent to expr >> "filename".

So using Put instead of >> works as expected:
In[1]:=
For[i=1,i<10,i++,name="a"<>ToString[i];
     Put[i,name]];
!!a7
 From In[1]:=
7
