I don't think this is a OS/browser dependent problem.
It's just that I use a nonwhite background for my window panes in
Windows.
In Linux, using Konqueror or mozilla I get a white background because I
did not bother to change the default background there.
(This is a common mistake I've found on several websites. I guess it's
due to the fact that developers are keen to use a default white
background for their environment, so they won't notice the missin html
tag, or css line).

You might want to try to change the windows's background color in
Windows display's properties (I guess win2k will behave in the same way
win98 does).
