On Win XP 32-bit (!!)(1.5 GB RAM) with Mathematica v5.0  it seems to be

   1.9202246726923565854204690606`15.954589770191005*^646456887

==> 2 147 483 295 b (~2^31)  ==>   268 435 412 B  (~2^28)
