Are you using a recent version of Mathematica? Then ListCorrelate should do everything you need, without all the extra manipulations you are doing; see: http://reference.wolfram.com/mathematica/ref/ListCorrelate.html and http://reference.wolfram.com/mathematica/tutorial/ConvolutionsAndCorrelations.html specifically for the 2D case.
