I *highly* recommend the book "Mathematica Navigator", currently 3rd
edition, by Heikki Ruskeepaa. I've actually assigned this as the
required textbook for my intermediate macroeconomics class. Tons of
practical examples for every thing you'll probably want to do with
Mathematica, and then some, including examples of different programming
styles.

You should be able to find it new or in very good condition for ~$50;
just make sure you get the latest edition and that confirm that it
comes with the CD-Rom, which contains the entire book in notebook form
and can be installed into your documentation center.
