after reading your response, I went and looked at a Notebook with the Toolbar...and you are so right...there is so much 'empty' space after the alignment icons that could be used for something....it would be terrific to add things I wanted there....or , at least, have more options......

  So, it's platform specific.

  I'm happy enough with the default in OS X -- Like Helen Reed, I use the keyboard shortcut to save (and save often). However, it would be a good idea for Wolfram Research to add a means to edit the contents of the toolbar, as is common (in OS X, at least) for most applications.
