Did you resolve this problem?
I've found that MS Word 2007 is also unable to read such an EPS file, even though it has no problem with, for example:
fig = ContourPlot[y, {x, 0, 1}, {y, 0, 1}];
Export["test.eps", fig, "EPS"];
