Bill --

Bring up a new notebook document through the menu item File/new notebook
Immediately type 2+2
Hit "Shift Enter" not "Ctrl Enter".
Should see 4.

Hi Dave,
I tried all your suggestions. But there is still no output. The input sign
appears for the first time I press "Ctrl" and "Enter" in every new Document,
no output. But later, if I input another line, there is no input sign and no
output result.

Bill,

Hitting the "Enter" key with the "Shift" key depressed and the cursor on the
2+2 line should do the calculation.
There is no additional "Return" key.
Also you can go to the menu item Evaluation/Evaluate Cells.

I purchased a student version of Mathematica. And I tried to enter
2+2, use "Shift" + "Enter" keys and no output. I tried "Enter" key and
still no output. and it seems that the Mathematica is running. I look
at my laptop thoroughly, and there is no key called "Return". Anyone
knows how to solve it?
