I have a relatively elderly Macbook Air, 2.13 GHz Core 2 Duo with 2Gb RAM. Modern ones are quicker. That said, I find it extremely useful with Mathematica 8, and I routinely have a MySQL server running on this system, feeding data to Mathematica. That would have required a proper server only a few years ago.

Benchmark results below:

Unterkofler:
Version = 8.0 for Mac OS X x86 (64-bit) (February 23, 2011)
Times   = {14.9603,20.7724,16.6082,9.41704,21.1777,8.35498,0.001637,8.54945,21.3555, 35.4749,29.1722,18.8397,19.4489}
Total Kernel Time = 224.133,  Absolute Time = 136.0
Benchmark = 0.745911 , Benchmark_p = 1.22896, kernels = 2
Version = 8.0 for Mac OS X x86 (64-bit) (February 23, 2011)
Times2   = {26.3729,26.9259,36.6277}
Total Kernel Time2 = 89.9266,  Absolute Time parallel = 57.76
Benchmark2 = 0.625987 , Benchmark parallel = 0.974648

Built-in:
 {"MachineName" -> "2-node homogeneous cluster", "System" -> "MacOSX-x86-64",
 "BenchmarkName" -> "MathematicaMark8", "FullVersionNumber" -> "8.0.1", "Date" -> "January 25, 2012",
 "BenchmarkResult" -> 0.359, "TotalTime" -> 231.142}

Looks like I never upgraded this one to 8.04.

Hope that helps,

MS
