speech processing

Dear MathGroup,

I have a Macintosh Front-end which allows me to record sounds and
display a plot of the waveform.  How can I access the numbers in the
waveform so that they may be processed ?

Has anyone written code to extract samples from sound files in either
resource or AIFF format ?

Has anyone written any notebooks on speech recognition using
Mathematica ?

I hope someone can help,
