Surface and gradient vector field

Can someone tell me how I can accomplish the following?

I would like to be able to plot a surface, and, below it, in the x-y plane,  
display the associated gradient vector field. It seem that the invidual plots  
of these items are of different graphic types, and so mathematica won't  
combine the plots.
